Canine drug question?
A vet gave us a bottle of Rimadyl, but we don't remember just what that one's for. We THINK it's an anti-inflammatory drug. Anyone recognize it?

Its an anti-inflammatory. The pills are liver flavoured so be very careful where you store them!. I had a scary incident 2 days ago with these pills.. they were prescribed to my Boston Terrier and while out of the house my Mastiff ate the whole bottle! (I didnt give any to my Boston, as they are not good meds) These are very dangerous pills! I suggest you research them before giving them to your dog... I couldnt find ANY good feedback on these things. Many scary stories out there. If the anti inflammatory is absolutely necessary for your dog I would maybe look into getting a different type of medication. I found my Boston (was prescribed these because he was attacked by another dog) didnt even need them. The antibiotic was all he really needed. Saved his little body from these harmful pills, and im happy to say that my Mastiff got off VERY lucky. Although we have a blood test in 2 weeks to see if he has any permanent kidney or liver damage :(. Good luck

It is definitely an anti-inflammatory known as NSAID's... Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
Have you got a dosage there as it is 4 mgs per kgs initial dosage and going down to 2 mgs per kgs after 7 days, and that is daily dose.

Yes, it is an anti-inflammatory drug as well as a pain medication. Please be careful with it as it can have adverse side effects. You should have your dog's liver function tested before, during and after stopping this medication. It can raise liver enzymes and cause permanent liver damage. You must also make certain your dog eats before taking this specific medication as it WILL cause an upset stomach and has the potential to eat holes in the intestines just as any NSAID can do. You must NEVER stop or start this medication without your vets okay. Please monitor your dog closely.
