the reporting says how many had seen this event. How are they able to know how many had viewed it?

I don't know about that unless there is some sort of tracking device they use. Could be, because on American Idol the will show how many voters are from Facebook, It will show areas of the US where people are "trending" or what have you. I really find it rather un-nerving that they know so much.
