Tenant rights to temporary AC?
What are the Alabama tenant rights to air conditioning?
Our central AC broke 6 days ago, the landlord finally got someone out here to look at it 3 days ago and it was determined that it needs to be completely replaced. Someone is coming tomorrow to evaluate the unit and make arrangements for a new system to be installed, which I am unsure of how long it will take.
Is it reasonable to ask the landlord if he can provide us with a portable AC until the new system can be installed? It's already in the high 80s here, and I have a medical condition that makes me intolerant to heat.
Thank you for your input!
The AC is included in the lease, so the landlord is required to maintain it in good working order.
It's day 10 and it's still not fixed. We were promised it would be fixed yesterday, but the repairman who came out and assessed yesterday said it would take another 7 days just to get the part needed. I do not think that is fixing the AC in a reasonable timeframe.

You have no right to AC as it is not a legal necessity in AL. Unless AC is included in your lease, the LL does not have to repair / replace the unit.
The LL is responding to the problem, and that is all you can expect.

There are no tenant "rights" to temporary AC. There are no tenant "rights" to AC at all.
So - no, it's not reasonable to ask him to provide an temporary unit.
If it's broken and landlord is making every effort to fix or replace - that is all that is required.
Sorry for your condition - but you may have to sit in front of a fan for a few days.

The law does not require them to supply a/c at all. It sounds like they are handling it on a reasonable timeline. 85 isn't that hot. It will be 100 here. Use a fan for a few days.

Zero rights to AC, not legally required.
They are having it replaced, that is their legal obligation.

It isn't a right at all. Expect a no. Aside from expensive he has to do something with it after the AC is fixed.
Your medical condition gives you the right to reasonable accommodation, but YOU pay for any accommodation, not your landlord. So, you do have the right to buy yourself a portable AC unit. As long as you also pay to run it he can't say anything.
