What can I do to steer us closer towards a relationship?

He held my hand for a couple of seconds while we were walking and then said it was awkward, which it was, but it was also very nice and I'd like to do it again. He might like me. I really like him and I want to seize the opportunity before he decides I'm not interested or something. I don't want to do something too obvious, because if he confronts me about it, it could ruin our friendship. But I'd like to do something that, if he's interested, he'll be a little confused but happy about. Something like what he did on Friday, holding my hand. Anything subtle that could either catch his fancy or gently push him in my direction? (And no, not holding hands, unless an impassable opportunity presents itself. He's much braver than I when it comes to romance.)
