Why did Verizon charge me for going above their data plan when I was using Wi-Fi?

I was at my home and had the Wi-Fi switch on and connected to our router. I checked this fact both before and after I received texts from Verizon back-to-back saying that I used 80%, 90%, 100%, and that I was now going over the data plan.

Is there something I'm not understanding about how to use Wi-Fi to avoid these charges? Like, is it both using my Wi-Fi and the data plan at the same exact time? My internet connection is stable, but could that be part of the issue?

You aren't charged for wi-fi (at least with the vast majority of plans), so chances are that you were going through the cell connection somehow.

If you're on wifi you shouldn't be charged. It's possible for someone to clone your phone if they get a hold of your IMEI number, but that's not overly likely to be the issue. Try calling Verizon and trying to figure out the issue.
