How much money for 6 weeks in Perth, Australia?
I am going to be visiting Perth in Australia for six weeks this Christmas, my boyfriend is going there to work for 5 months so will already be out there renting a place with a friend so I will probably just have to give them a small amount towards their bills. My boyfriend will probably pay for a few things, not a lot, but I want to take enough money with me so I'm not struggling. I will need to pay for some food and probably going out a few times for dinner and other things but nothing very extravagant. I was thinking of taking around £1000 (around $1800 aud) . Do you think this sounds like the right amount? Enough, too much, not enough? Because I just have no idea at all. My boyfriend is going out there this October, before I go, so I guess he will be able to tell me how much he thinks I will need before I arrive but just want to know in advance really so I can get saving! Thanks :)

$1800 for six weeks is only $300 a week. If your accommodation is being supplied you will need to budget $100 a day for food, transport and incidentals. That's $700 a week or $4200 for six weeks. You will probably get by on a little less but you need to have $4000 when you arrive in Australia. $1800 is nowhere near enough.

I generally bring $4000 for 5 weeks. I stay with relatives over there, so don't have hotel costs. You could save up £3000, bring $2000 AUD in cash and your debit card with you, and then withdraw any more as you need it, at an ATM. Ask your boyfriend how much to contribute to the weekly shopping bill - likely to be a nominal sum around $100 or $150. Food and eating out are all more expensive there than at home. Ask him if he would like anything brought from home - I usually bring tea bags. The Aussie version is not nearly as nice as UK. If you do, be sure to declare them on the immigration form you have to fill in before the plane lands. If you declare them, there is no problem. Also make sure you know his address - you have to state on the form where you will be staying.

Here are some ideas:
2L milk = $2.40
Bread = $2 - $5
Pint of beer = $10 (yep! This is why take away from bottle shops is so popular)
Dinner at a average restaurant = $20 - $40 for one course
Swim at Cottesloe beach = free
Walk through King's Park = free
Train from Freo to Perth = hmm about $5? Not sure.
Have fun!
