As with any technique, it should be in service of the art instead of the other way around. When used in good taste, it can be awesome, but I've seen it overused, done in wrong contexts, etc. I love jazz, death metal, and even bands who combine the two. A great drummer knows when to play as well as when to shut up. Overall, the precision, creativity, and discipline required to be a great drummer are vastly underrated.

Not my cup of tea at all. But, for those that are really good at it it's impressive. I've played gigs and been to gigs where some of the bands with drummers...that were less than talented tried to play them and it completely destroyed the song. There is a lot more technique and rhythm that go into than some would think to make them sound good.

again, I don't listen to death metal but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate a musician that is good at their craft such as a Mike Portnoy.
