What is the difference between an epiphany and a theophany?

    Epiphany = any kind of deep revelation or understanding. When I put together all the principles of how magnetism works to produce electricity, it was a major epiphany for me. Epiphany suggests a kind of higher understanding that brings it all together for some field of knowledge. It obviously can also apply to some kind of spiritual awareness that links everything together in a whole new way.

    Theophany = some actual revelation from God. Moses' experience with the burning bush, if it were true, would be a theophany. Isaiah's experience of god's call, as he reports in Isaiah would also be a theophany.

    An epiphany is you realizing that you've been shown something. A theophany is God showing himself to you.
