Why would my bike be "choking"?
I recently acquired a 95 Harley Heritage Softail Classic with a 1340 EVO engine. It's got about 16,500 miles on it.
I took it out a few times for a ride and it seemed to be running good, then out of the blue it just choked. Like it was running out of gas, but then went back to running normal.
Could there just be dirt in the tanks or carb or another spot?
I've got the service manual for it and was thinking about draining the tanks, checking the screen and the carb to look for dirt. any other suggestions?? Thanks.

most likely it is just some dirt in the fuel supply. If you dont have fuel filter install one in your fuel line. Do not rely on the fine mesh screen in your fuel petcock. With glass filter you can at a glance see if fuel is getting to the carb. Here is a quick thing that might work.Only takes a few seconds to do this. Start the bike and then while riding, turn the fuel OFF. Just as the motor starts to choke out from the fuel being turned off turn the gas back on. Usually this can be enough to dislodge small particles of dirt in the fuel supply. If the problem persists then I would be looking into removing and cleaning the carb and installing a fuel filter. Every one of my bikes has a nice glass fuel filter so I have visible evidence of gas getting to my carb!

Sounds fuel related, possibly a clogged fuel tank cap vent or blockage somewhere in the system. When it chokes, it usually means it's struggling to get fuel, in which case it runs lean.

Possibles to check. Dirt or gunk in float. Pilot jet, float height. Ignition pick up maybe over heating. Pull the cover off the nose cone and see if it's starting to melt.

Check to make sure the vent for the gas tank cap is clear, and the tank is vented. When this condition, happens, pull over and remove the cap and put it back on. If everthing is fine, then that's it.
