Aerobic Respiration: Where does the carbon come from?

Aerobic respiration seems simple enough. Molecules of O2 are inhaled, and CO2 is exhaled. However, I do not understand where the carbon comes from.

Simply, the carbon originally comes from glucose, C6H12O6. As the molecule is oxidized, H is removed, leaving C and O. The C and O are released as CO2, and the H is used to generate ATP. As the energy of the H is depleted, it is combined with the oxygen we breathe in to make H2O.
