Fishing from Sunfish sailboats?

I own a 14 foot Sunfish sailboat, and currently live right near a pond that has some good-size bass, pickerel, perch, sunfish, and I think bullhead.

I was wondering how fishing would be in the Sunfish sailboat?

If the boat capsized, my rod floats, and I might be able to tie my tackle to it somewhere (since the pond I am at generally doesn't get wind speeds too high, I don't think capsizing will be too big of an issue anyways).

What I'm mostly concerned over is if there's enough room to sit and fish comfortably, and if the boat is just capable to fish from in general.

    I'd suggest you troll.

You "could" cast and retrieve, but, it would be difficult with the boom and mast constantly in the way.

    Here's what you do-

Purchase a rod holder, (either permanent mount or removable) and install it on an easily accessible area near the rudder. (Something like this- http://www.basspro.com/Attwood-Pro-Series-Rod-Hold... )

Then troll a shoreline (or deeper water weed line) with Crankbait's, Paddle-tailed Plastic Worms, and/or Jigs. Because you cover more water while trolling and the lure is generally 30-50 yards behind the boat, you WILL catch something- usually a bass.

Why is trolling the best type of fishing to do in a sailboat?

Answer- Because sailboats are difficult to keep still! Best to "go with the flow"- if you know what I mean...?

The only other thing you could/can do is sail to a remote part of the pond/lake, bring down your sail, anchor the boat, and go fishing.

    SO, it's troll or anchor.............

I am glad you asked this because I happen to own a sunfish as well. It has a red and white sail with a fish on it. It all depends on how fast the wind is. If it is very calm, then yes. You could tie your tackle down. However it may be hard to cast, and the boat may be constantly be moving. I am still learning with it, but if you are advanced you should have no problem. Although the sunfish is a small sailboat, I think there is enough room to comfortably sit if you are alone. I have been thinking of this as well.

it is awesome.. the best trolling ever.. catch big *** jacks and such trolling back n forth across the inlet mouth, around the channel markers... when the action hits, let go of the tiller and sheet and fight that big bastard.. the fish will drag the boat backwards, as in Jaws or The Old Man n The Sea, and the bow will stay pointed in the wind, with any luck.. buy a small floating gaff hook and be ready to stare that fish in the eye all the way back home.

short trolling rod, a reel you don't care too much about, rinse the hell out of it when you get home and it can take it.. you hold the rod to leeward, with your sheet hand, you'll get the hang of it..

ps.. forget about casting.. and put wine corks on each point of yer hooks, trust me on that.
