Have you ever heard a box turtle being called a tartan?

A neighbor atound 80 called a box turtle a tartan. We live in Northern KY near to Southeastern Indiana and Cincinnati. I come from New England and have never heard the term used? Other than the pattern of the shell being like a plaid, my brother and i could not figure out where the name comes from. Anyone have a clue?

Dion, terrapin was something my brother thought when she might have said , and he used the word but she said tartan. We have been here for 20 plus years and have never heard the reference. Box turtles are very common. My brother has to avoid them when he mows, and we both dodge them when they cross the roads.

He was calling it a "terrapin" which is another name for turtle that people sometimes use.

Now, using your best southern accent, repeat the word "terrapin" a few times.

    Tar-pen.

    Tar-pen.

    Tar-pen.

Sounds a bit like tartan to me.
