Does android kitkat 4.4.2 come with newly bought nexus 7 2012 devices?

I have the nexus 7 2013 which is updated and I recently bought the nexus 7 2012 as a gift, I was just wondering if android 4.4 will come automatically with the new device or will it have to be manually updated?

(I don't really understand technology)

    You have to update it.

    While Nexus devices will receive all updates, a boxed Nexus 2012 has whatever firmware was out in 2012. Which was 4.2 I believe.

    You will need to upgrade OS manually
