Cooney hit his prime between 1980 and 1981 when he stopped in succession JImmy Young Ron Lyle and Ken Norton before his failed challenge for the heavyweight title against Larry Holmes in 1982. Cooney lost by 13th round TKO to Holmes after a strong start where he hurt Holmes with his vaunted left. Boxing historians said Cooney's long layoff after his win over Norton ( 1st round TKO) which was a strategy resorted by his handlers to preserve him for a then anticipated fight with Holmes and his relative inexperience did him in in his most important fight to that date. They also observed that Cooney was a virtual one-armed bandit relying solely on his left with his right hand virtually just for pawing or decoy. Cooney never recovered from that Holmes loss and after steamrolling over two patsy opponents he lost successive KOs to Michael Spinks (5th round ) and the then comebacking George Foreman ( 2nd round ).

Morrison on the other hand hit his prime between 1992 and 1993 where he won eight fights via the short route culminating in his winning the WBO heavyweight title by UD over George Foreman. Among his victims included Bobby Quarry Art Tucker Marshall Tillman and former world title challengers Joe Hipp and Carl Williams. That winning streak happened after he suffered his first pro career loss by TKO 5 to former Olympic qualifier rival and eventual Olympic heavyweight gold medalist Ray Mercer in 1991. But Morrison would lose the WBO title in his first defense dropping a shock first round TKO to unheralded contender Michael Bennt. But Morrison was not yet through and would enjoy a great recovery between 1994-95 registering another eight straight wins seven by KO/TKO including over Razor Ruddock to win the IBC heavyweight title. A long sought unification fight with Lennox Lewis in October 1995 ended in Morrison being stopped in the 7th round

Based on the foregoing I would favor Morrison to beat Cooney prime for prime in view of his superior experience better physical conditioning stamina and fighting skills as well as punching power.

Morrison by mid to late round TKO with The Duke taking advantage of Cooney's weak right hand lead and his stamina issues.

this could conceivably go one of two way, depending on which morrison turned up. if he boxes cooney, he takes a decision or scores a late stoppage.

if he goes for the early ko like he did against mercer and burns out, he suffers a similar fate.

RIP Matthew Saad Muhammad.... just found out.

I would not assume that Morrisson knocks out Cooney since I saw Mercer beat Mossisson and consider Cooney a better fighter than Mercer.

Anytime you have to big punchers in the ring anything can happen and this would have been a good fight to see.

It would have ended in A KO for sure they were both big punchers but I would have to go with Morrison on this one.Cooney always looked awkward to me

Tommy Morrison was superior to Jerry Cooney in every respect, this one wouldn't have been close. Morrison by KO inside 6 rounds.
