You can assume the persona of a mermaid, but you can not actually be one in real life. If they actually existed during the life of the earth, they would not look any thing like what people have made them look like and they would be extinct 4.5 Billion years later., like any other existence that has been on the earth over all those years. When one existence expires a new existence comes into life, similar to the original one, but totally different in it's own way.

No. Even if you become one, it wouldn't be nice. You could swim the deep oceans, but won't you get attacked by nasty sharks and other undesirable sea creatures. And if you get caught accidentally, you'd likely be put in a giant fishtank and displayed for the amusement of others. Wouldn't that be horrid?
