Why aren't you a feminist?

Maybe this is naive, but I thought that if people cared enough about gender equality issues to read and write posts about the topic, that they would be in favour of studying the history, theory, and practice of these matters systematically; in short, that they would be feminists.

Apparently not!

But that's ok. To each their own. Debate and conversation and disagreement are healthy and productive ways of engaging each other.

What's your reason? The word "feminist" has too many negative associations? You find it threatening? You believe gender equality has already been solved and there is no point to discuss it? What is it?

I believe it once lived a purpose and that has been flipped over and changed drastically by both neoliberalism and neoconservatism. Is gender inequality still rampant? Yes. However, I do believe things have drastically occurred and that modern day feminism takes itself too seriously and is mostly artificial -- of course this is not speak of ALL feminist of this era.

Yeah for me the word has too many negative association. I would consider myself feminist but there are so many people who call themselves feminists that really aren't for woman to be equal. They feel entitled because they are women. I feel that everyone should have a fair chance but everyone only deserves what they earn. So I am a feminist.....but not because of stupid women.

This word has such a negative connotation for many people. I consider myself to be a feminist, but let's not forget that there is a difference between separatist-feminist and feminist.

Its just a label for women who want gender equality, thats all. People overuse the word and take it too seriously, especially the men on this site
