Child always walking on her tip toes?

My daughter is 6 and for at least the last year (maybe longer, but we've definitely noticed it for this long) always walks on her tip toes. We ask her why and she says that walking normal feels funny to her. She insists that it does not hurt to walk normal, but she says it "feels funny". Does anyone have any experience with this sort of symptom or situation?

My little, adopted sister (6) does this all the time and when asked why, she would just say "I don't know". We have asked her therapists and they claim it is because of low self-esteem issues. This has always stumped me. Some studies show there is a connection to toe walking and autism. Others say it is a bad habit that is kept from learning to walk. Studies claim there is a link between muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, and toe walking. It is also disputed that kids who toe-walk usually have developmental disorders or neuropsychiatric disorders.

Apparently it is called Idiopathic Toe Walking and can be corrected with braces for the feet. My sister had braces and it does make a difference when she is wearing them, but the key is to be consistent.

It is a good thing that you are worried about this issue, because toe walking can cause arthritis and muscle problems.

I am sorry I was not more help, although is is a very prevalent issue, not much is known about it.
