HDMI to VGA does not work?
My laptop only has a HDMI outlet and I have a monitor that only accepts DVI and VGA. I bought a cable that goes from the laptop HDMI to monitor DVI and it does not work. Later I realized that HDMI is digital and VGA is analog so it wouldn't work. Should I buy a HDMI to DVI cable? Would it work? How can I connect my laptop to the monitor?

It really does depend as there are different DVI connectors. DVI-A is analog only, DVI-D is digital only, and DVI-I is capable of both. Though a device might have DVI-I connectors, it might only be analog compatible.
Do note, there are HDMI to VGA converters. These are not the same as a simple cable. Something like this:

I am sure there are other options out there too.
