Fish Mate filter problem?

I have a fish mate pressurised UV pond filter which has recently been getting blocked very quickly - to the extent that the waterfall actually stops after a couple of days.

I have been using the "Powerclenz" cleaning cycle regularly but it doesn't seem to remove all that much sediment and needs to be done every day to keep the system running at all.

Today I was so fed up with the poor flow than I "reverse-flushed" the filter by connecting the pump to the outlet pipe and the intake to the debris hose. Absolutely masses of debris poured out and it took a couple of minutes for the system to run clear. On reconnecting it the flow was back to its old self - rapid and clear.

My question is twofold:

1. What has gone wrong with the "Powerclenz" and can I put it right?

2. Will using a reverse flush do any harm?

Filters are expensive to buy and I don't want to replace my existing one if I can keep it working.

Many pond filters use reverse flush to clean them out. I know Oase have a 3rd outlet for flushing the filter which pretty much is the same what you have done.

Nothing is wrong with your filter. It just is having to deal with more waste than what it can handle. What I can suggest is to get a non pressurized filter cheap from ebay and use it solely for mechanical filtration. Once your pond has had a proper clean, the frequency of the clogging up of the fishmate will get better.

you are not maintaining the filter properly and it may be undersized, or your pond has a lot of filth and needs a larger prefilter on the pump.

all that filth should have been cleaned out of the prefilter and not reverse flushed back into the pond. Remove whatever filter material is clogging and clean it with a hose; never clean all the filter materials at the same time, just whatever material is clogging. This should be considered normal maintenance along with trying to remove or reduce the sediment load in the pond.
