Which of the following characteristics is unique to angiosperms?

1. pollen

2. vascular bundles

3. thick cuticle

4. lignin present in cell walls

5. a haploid gametophyte retained within tissues of the diploid sporophyte

I thought gymnosperms had pollen, I know they have vascular tissue (and thus vascular bundles?). Thick cuticles are present in some of the earliest plants, I thought. Lignin, as well, is present in early plants. And I thought gymnosperms retained the female gametophyte in a cone, part of the adult sporophyte.

So, by process of elimination, I'm left with... nothing.

I took a guess and picked 5. That was apparently the correct answer (phew). All I can guess is that the female cone of gymnosperms is not considered a tissue of the sporophyte, or that the gametophyte is not considered to be "retained", only "attached".

Anybody who can give a more precise and confident answer would be appreciated.
