compensation after theft?

Basically my ex partner stole a house key then used that to steal some items worth about £800. It has been reported to the police and they are investigating but it's doubtful they will recover anything as she is on drugs again. So i'm wondering if the items are recovered can i get compensation?

Update:

I ment from victims support.

And Piran i pay £200 a month in tax and have done for the last 10 years when i started work

There is no automatic "state" compensation for this.

You can get compensation for stolen items if you sue the thief who stole them. This would have to be a private action started by you anf it will only succeed if the thief has the resources to pay you. This may be unlikely if she is a drug addict because the items will have been sold quite quickly.

You can claim from insurance if you are covered for theft, you will have to fill in an insurance company claim form.

If the items are recovered then you will not be paid anything from insurance to compensate for the loss. But you might be able to claim for the cost of changing the door lock so the stolen key cannot be used again, you'll have to talk to your insurance company about that.

Compensation from who? We taxpayers - NO. The person who stole them - has she any money .

You should have had insurance to cover theft - did you?

    UK

If the court decides to order the offender to pay you compensation, it will be limited to what the offender can afford and may depend on the sentence the court has already passed - See more at: https://www.victimsupport.org.uk/help-victims/prac...

No, you should have had insurance to cover for the theft.
