Would you ever work at a Nursing Home?

...while you were going to school? Nursing homes have part time jobs in housekeeping, laundry, and dietary. Is that something you could do?

Update:

To anybody who reads Lucifers answer...do NOT let a loved one be abused in a Nursing Facility. Report anything that appears or absolutely is abuse to the state that you live.

Not all Facilities are like this, and I'm very sorry on what happened to Lucifer's family. There are bad homes out there, and these homes have got to be dealt with.

Thanks for all your answers.

No. Already did that with a family member and won't do it again.

Almost 7 yrs ago my mother went into the hospital. She fractured her hip so the Dr. tried to do a hip replacement and this failed. He tried 2 more times and her body continued to reject the surgery. She had a history of chronic pain since the 60's with slipped discs in her spine so when the hospital asked us what meds she was on my dad and I had to go back to their house and dig up all her meds. 3 that really caught my attention were hydrocodone, OxyContin and morphine that were all currently dated yet with different names of Dr.'s that prescribed them. With my moms lethargic state the Dr. who attempted her hip replacement diagnosed her as having drug induced dementia. She almost died while at the hospital after being one whole year there, but somehow she pulled through. My dad and I even tried to take care of her, but we quickly realized that we weren't trained or educated on how to take care of her properly.

With lots of research we put her in a nursing home that was beautiful, but understaffed. There were 30 patients per wing and yet only one nursing staff member per wing during 8 hour shifts. There was also the issue of an odor in my moms room. I would alert housekeeping of this and they'd try to get rid of the stench. They even hired a carpet steam cleaning service to come and take care of it but nothing seemed to get rid of set in ammonia.

We then moved my mom to a rehab facility and made it very clear about her physical and mental state. Even told the Dr. and nursing staff how we want to get her off all the pain meds or at least ween her down to one. At first the respected our wishes. She started to go through withdrawals and began to scream in the middle of the night keeping other patients up. The evening nursing staff couldn't handle it, and without informing my moms Dr., would give her the pain meds she'd keep asking for. I was that staffs worst nightmare and would get on their butts about making my mom lethargic once again so this off the pain killer, on the pain killers and me bítching the whole staff out went on for some time back and forth. It got so bad that an evening staff member, who one day made it verbally clear to me that she disliked my mom, got so irritated with my mom that she slapped her across the face.

We immediately removed my mom from rehab and put her in an assistant living home. Unfortunately since the staff was only care givers and NOT nursing care, insurance didn't cover it. I will say it was the BEST care she got all the way up until her death, 5/5/13.

    Pardon for being long.

No. I had to help take care of my grandparents when they got real bad, as in bed ridden. I don't think I could ever do anything similar to that ever again. It takes a lot out of you.. probably one of the most stressful times of my life.

As a teen I volunteered in an extended care home. I quit when they said I had to help sponge bath them.

To this day I cannot look at a naked woman without envisioning them at 85 years old.
