How to make up for the fact that I don't eat many fruits of vegetables?

I'm 22 years old, and have always, for as long as I can remember, disliked fruits and vegetables. I'm aware that not having enough of these is quite unhealthy. In order to try to counter this, I do eat dry fruit such as craisins and raisins. I also only drink 100% cranberry juice(which I have a couple of times a day) and water. I might have a small soda or chocolate milk once every other week or so.

As for vegetables, I will eat corn and onions. I also love garlic(fresh garlic), which I have started putting on much of my food. I probably have it at least once a day. Other than that I do not have any vegetables directly. Of course, I eat pizza and what not but I don't think tomato sauces counts as a vegetable. I know fiber comes from vegetables so I have cheerios(regular, honey nut or kashi) in the morning to try to increase my fiber intake.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could sneak more veggies into my diet? I am looking for ways where I can minimize the taste but still receive the nutritional effect.

Use almond milk instead of cow milk. Eat less animal protein so that you will be more hungry for fruits and vegetables. Tomato sauce actually does count as a vegetable. It only happens to be mushed up for you so you don't need to chew it, but it still contains a hefty amount of soluble fiber.

It is not necessary to eat like a rabbit in order to be healthy, so there is no need to feel you are eating unhealthy if you don't eat salads.

Once you are a fully matured adult, you don't need as much variety as you should have had as a growing person. An adult can live healthy indefinitely on a diet only of raw potatoes. Variety is not necessary nor is it necessary to take supplements unless you know what you are deficient in.

When eating veggies, it is more important that they are raw. They are a source of anti-oxidants, but cooking them destroys the anti-oxidants. It is better to eat only a few organic raw vegetables than it is to eat a lot of processed and cooked vegetables.

It is probably best to avoid eating corn unless you know it is not GMO.

Eating dried fruit has lots of fiber, but there is usually added sugar and there are not as many anti-oxidants as fresh fruit. But there is enough benefit that you should continue to eat what you like.

Drinking 100% unsweetened cranberry juice is good for the bladder. Try eating some fresh organic blueberries. Unfortunately blueberries and strawberries have large amounts of pesticide residue on the most edible and nutritious parts, so it is important to only get the organic ones because it is so difficult to remove the pesticides. The skins and seeds have most of the vitamins and anti-oxidants while the fruit has most of the calories. You can juice fruit and vegetables so that you don't have to chew it. The pulp is removed by a juicer, so if you want it, don't bother getting an expensive juicer; just use a blender instead.

You can blend cashews with it to soak up some of the water and give it a creamy texture. Just don't expect it to taste like anything you've tasted before. Keep an open mind to the flavor and you will be able to enjoy it.

You can freeze banana and use a machine to make Yonanas which is similar to frozen yogurt. Mix any blended and frozen vegetables with it for a unique taste experience.

I agree with the other posters that you should definitely take supplements such as a daily vitamin and probably a fiber tablet. I encourage you to research some vegetable recipes to try. You may find that you develop a taste/liking for them. Start off small with a baked sweet potato... Although it's not really healthy, add a little butter and some brown sugar to make it taste better. You could try to make stuffed squash, which has a meat and rice stuffing in the squash. I'm just sort of brainstorming. Definitely try new ways to cook vegetables. I think that my fondness for different foods has improved as I get older. You could even try shish kabobs with onion, chicken, and pineapple (which is divine when cooked). Find a recipe for fruit dip and try some apples dipped in the dip. Start off small; you may be surprised!! There are also great recipes for things like zucchini muffins that have added fiber. Or make your spaghetti sauce and add puréed zucchini, carrots, and squash... This will definitely add fiber. You can also try bananas dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts- then frozen. The sky is the limit. Oatmeal is full of fiber as well... Find a recipe for oatmeal cookies. Best wishes!!

Source(s): I used to hate beets, until I was at work one night, and I was starving!! I had no money to run out to get something, so I ate for free in the dining hall. They had beets, and I was literally so hungry that I forced myself to eat them. I have loved them since! 😊

You describe eating dried fruit, fruit juice, soda, choc milk, corn, onions, pizza, cheerios.

Of course you know this is very limited. I'm a bit surprised that people are suggesting you take supplements, as if you can carry on eating poor quality food and pay out to make up for real nutrition for your health.

I don't really like fruit or veg either, and I didn't like the idea of taking pills, so I started making smoothies with various fruits and veg, (you can get a lot of your 5 a day in just one drink) and it really works! You can sweeten with honey or even sugar. Also, don't give up if you dot like one flavour because there are so many different combinations!!

    My faves are:

Banana milkshake (you can add choc powder for taste)

    Strawberry and kiwi

    Carrot

    Apple and raspberries

    Melon and grape

    And orange and apple

Don't forget you can add fat free yoghurt to thicken and make it a milkshake! Enjoy!!

Have you tried supplemental vitamins? I have to take iron pills. You could probably find them in any grocery store. Do a little research to find the vitamins you're missing out on and pick up some supplements at the store.

You should be taking supplements and there's also V8 juice which has a full serving of veggies and now there's fruit in them as well.

V8 is always good because you can just drink it quickly.

I know a lady who got into eating vegetables by cooking them on pizza. She put them in different foods before she would eat them plain.

Vegetables derive their vitamins from the soil. Eat dirt.
