what happens if you don't have a phone?
A friend went to sign up on Yahoo and they demanded her telephone number. Actually, her cell phone. But, she's deaf and doesn't have one because she can't hear it and doesn't want to be bothered by one. After all, to her, it's just another bill, harassing callers, and all that that she doesn't want to bother with.
But, without one, Yahoo won't let her sign up, and she says other sites are like this too. What's going on? NSA rules or just nosy sites that want to sell your number to make money for a "free" site? I don't recall having to use my number when I signed up.

It's a new thing. Many people are annoyed that they cannot open an account without one. Yahoo seem to believe it will cut down on spammers opening accounts, but honestly, there are as many if not more.
I wonder how friends like yours & elderly people open accounts.
If you use social media I would post a comment on Twitter or Facebook & see if Yahoo reply.

I had the same problem. As far as I can see you have to buy a cheap cell you won;t use and just leave it in a drawer. Seems wasteful
