The story and history is far too complex and lengthy to put in here, but I'll do what I can. It's an MMORPG game based in the fantasy world of Azeroth. The story is based around two large factions composed of multiple races, the Alliance and the Horde. They have a long history of war and bloodshed with each other and are usually at a tenuous peace. As time goes on (over the expansions), they struggle to fight off many ancient and powerful threats that resurface, while dealing with the power struggles between the two factions.

Gameplay wise, there are 13 different races you can play as between each faction and 11 separate classes. Each with their own unique fighting styles and history. You travel across multiple continents over the course of your leveling experience from 1-90. There many ways to get experience such as: killing, questing, dungeons, etc. The world is completely open and you're free to travel anywhere (within your level range, going to high level zones too early is suicidal).

There's plenty of end game content. You have raids, more of an elite form of dungeons, which are much more difficult and with greater gear rewards. There's also quite a bit of PvP (Player vs Player) content like battlegrounds and arenas. As well, if other players are flagged (or you're on a PvP server) you can freely attack people.
