trying to find out about a collection company trying to collect a debt from me for a cell phone I never had.?

A company called "convergent" & also "palisades" has contacted me several times about a cell phone account I never had from back in the early 2000s in Texas ( I now live in Oregon ) and are claiming I owe them over $700.00. I never had a cell phone when I lived there. They have just sent me a form to file a claim of "theft of identifty" & thereby service" but no way to return the form. I looked the company up online and all I found were complaints about the company and how they were nothing but a scam but nothing in detail......does anybody know anything more about this company or how to find out about the situation I'm in?... because I'm certainly at a loss for answers.

Stop talking to them and absolutely do not give them any more info. This is either a case of the collection agency doing a skip trace for someone with a similar name or it is just an out and out scam.

A cell phone bill from early 2000 would be past the Statute of Limitations (SOL), the time frame to bring lawsuit, in every state. It's also beyond the 7 year reporting period. Just tell them to go pound sand and hand up. If they continue to contact you, send them a certified, return receipt letter telling them to cease all contact.

If they leave you no clear contact information but are claiming that they need you to pay for that debt, they're likely scams trying to lure you into divulging your personal information. They probably don't care about the money itself.

Ignore and move on. Real debt agencies eventually send you a real notice in the mail, with everything clearly stated.

Plus, the fact that the companies that contacted you have no actual website is already a giveaway that they're fraudulent.

Don't file ID theft reports...you'll give them tons of personal information this way and you don't want them to have this. The debt is time barred. Just send them a cease communication letter.

    - If they keep calling, tell them that you are recording the call.
