What does this fan say? Is it Chinese or Japanese?

Please translate what it means in English. Also, please translate what it sounds like using English letters. Thank you so much. :)

    It's Chinese.

    竹 [Mandarin: zhú ] bamboo. It means Modest, Upright in China.

    梅 [Mandarin: méi ] plum blossom. It means Persistent, Indomitable, Self-improvement in China.

    I can't load the second picture.

    I saw "竹海" in the first one. Chinese and Japanese both have this word.

    Means "an ocean of bamboo", sounds "zhu hai" in Pinyin, "droo hai" in English letters.

    I don't know how Japanese says it.

    ========

    Errr... wyoscot is right. It's "mei", not "hai". Sorry I made a fault.

    竹梅 -- [Mandarin: zhu mei] bamboo and plums

    Could also be read mei zhu = plums and bamboo.

    Probably Chinese but Japanese use the same characters.
