My job wants me to sign resignation paperwork?

I am leaving my current job of 4 years as a security officer because I have found a better paying job. I just now completed my 2 weeks so now I have to return my uniforms. I got a voicemail from my boss saying come in friday morning to return my uniform and sign resignation papers.

The thing is I have resigned from other jobs but I have never been asked to sign resignation papers. I simply resign and that is it. What is with the resignation papers? I gave a proper two weeks notice.

Do I have to sign these papers? What will happen if I don't?

Employers would typically like to have a signed resignation to ensure that an unemployment claim will not be filed against them in the future. If you are leaving for another job you have nothing to lose by signing a resignation notice.

Richard is right. They might also want to get an "exit interview": questions about your experience on the job (were you satisfied with the pay, benefits, working conditions, amount and quality of communication, etc.). If you had health insurance, they'll want to give you your COBRA paperwork. It's so they can tie up their ends. There's no harm to you in doing it. Not doing it might affect a future reference.

Legally, you can't be forced to. But what's your objection?
