Different bars may have different rules but at most bars, the bartender brings the drink first and then collects from the customer. If a customer has money on the bar, you take the cost of the drink out of the customer's money and return the change. In some bars a customer may run a tab for the evening or give you a credit card to run the tab on. Check the rules of the bar with your boss.

If your employer knows that you have no experience and don't know how to mix drinks, he/she will provide training. In which case, the main thing you need is patience and a pleasant personality. Being a people person helps a lot in most service jobs.

If you have given your employer the impression that you have been to bartender's school or have prior experience, you are going to have big problems. Making many drinks require exact measurements and knowledge of the many ingredients that go into that drink.

Don't get high off your own supply.
