what is DVD playback? (windows 8 and WMP help?)?

I'm getting a new laptop with windows 8 and I'm going to be moving the TV shows i've downloaded onto it but after some researching people are saying there's no "DVD playback" but you can "get it" or "download" it for Windows Media Player.. But after more searching I'm still confused. I used Windows Media Player to play all my MP4 TV show files and I've never had an issue so will it be the same of the Windows 8 computer? Can someone explain what the heck DVD playback is? Also I have that VLC player and if I just need that to play it then I'm OK with that since I use it for my TV show files that aren't MP4 but I'm jsut really confused! I don't want over 40GB worth of files to go to waste because I cant use WMP or VLC. Windows 8 seems confusing. Sorry if this makes no sense and thanks for ANY help I appreciate it.

DVD playback what happens when you play a movie DVD on your computer. Simply putting a movie DVD into the DVD player on your computer running Vista or Windows 7, will launch Windows Media Player. WMP will then being playing the movie.

Microsoft has to pay to include DVD playback in every copy of Vista or 7 that was sold. Thing is, there is this new class of computer called an Ultrabook that doesn&rswuo;t ship will any optical drive. So Microsoft opted to not include DVD playback in Windows 8 figuring that they shouldn’t charge for features that people couldn’t even use.

So how does this affect you? If you buy a PC running Windows 8 that doesn’t have a DVD drive, like an Ultrabook, then you decided that you want to watch movies on DVD. You will then have to buy an external DVD player, plus DVD playback software if the drive doesn’t come bundled with any.

What if you buy a PC with a DVD drive installed? Then the manufacturer will include DVD playback software. So instead of using Windows Media Player when inserting a movie DVD, you will see a different program that will then play the movie.

Windows Media Player will still play MP4 and all your other videos just fine and the PC will be able to read data DVDs just fine as well.
