Unwanted start up programs?

How do I get rid of programs that run on startup? Programs that decided to do this on their own, as opposed to those that really are necessary.

My computer runs Windows 7 home edition.

Thanks.

click start button and type in the bottom search box, msconfig, run that from the list and click the startup tab, you need only one of those running; your anti virus program. uncheck all the others and apply and ok and restart. kill stuff in the scheduler too. find it the same way in the search box on the start menu.

Be careful. Not a;ll machines ONLY need the anti-virus. So only turn off totally unwanted programs. Also, any program which sets itself up to auto start without asking should be suspect. That is how a lot of Malware works. DO A MALWARE SCAN first.
