Bryophytes are a group of simple and primitive plants. They grow in moist and shady places forming a dense mass or mat on damp soil, rock, logs and other substrata. They are basically terrestrial forms, but require the presence of water for completing the life cycle. Hence, they are commonly described as 'amphibians of the plant kingdom'.

A gametophyte is the haploid multicellular stage in the alternation of generations during the life cycle of land plants and algae. It is produced from mitotic cell division of spores, which are produced by meiosis in sporophytes. Gametophytes produce haploid male or female gametes (or both), by mitosis.

The female and male gametes are also called, respectively, egg cells and sperm cells. The fusion of male and female gametes produces a diploid zygote, which develops by repeated mitotic cell divisions into a multicellular sporophyte. Because sporophytes are the product of the fusion of two haploid gametes, these sporophyte cells are normally diploid, containing two sets of chromosomes. The mature sporophyte produces spores by a process of cell division called meiosis, or reduction division, in which the chromosome pairs are separated once again to form single sets. The spores are therefore once again haploid and develop into haploid gametophytes.

bryophyte (division Bryophyta), any green, seedless plant that is one of the mosses, hornworts, or liverworts. Bryophytes are among the simplest of the terrestrial plants. Most representatives lack complex tissue organization, yet they show considerable diversity in form and ecology. They are widely distributed throughout the world and are relatively small compared with most seed-bearing plants. Most are 2–5 cm (0.8–2 inches) tall or, if reclining, generally less than 10 cm (4 inches) long. The division Bryophyta includes three main evolutionary lines: the mosses (class Bryopsida, or Musci), the liverworts (class Hepatopsida, or Hepaticae), and the hornworts (class Anthocerotopsida, or Anthocerotae). It is conservatively estimated that there are more than 1,000 genera and more than 18,000 species of bryophytes. Dating to early in the Ordovician Period (488 million to 444 million years ago), Bryophyta is the most ancient lineage of terrestrial plants.

bryophytes are moss and other non-vascular plants.

The haploid gametophyte of a moss is the carpet of green fronds. The sporophyte is stalk with the bulb on top.
