My sister had this exact same problem. They wouldn't fix it because she was out of warranty, but if u are in warranty, they will probably replace it.
If you are out of warranty, it can be fixed. You should make an appointment at the Apple store and see if they can do a quick fix on the spot.
In the mean time, you can put a lock button on your screen that you can use to turn the phone off. To access it, go to: Settings>General>Accessibility>Turn on assistive touch.
