How would a white teacher earn the resspect of minority students?

I am a new middle school teacher. I feel that many of my minority students did not respect me as a teacher as much as other teachers of their same background. How would I be able to correct this? I understand that I do not know what it takes to grow up as a minority. In fact, I grew up as an upper middle class in a very poor community in the south. So, what do I need to do to make sure that I can reach ALL of my students?

Several behavior patterns will encourage them to "accept" you more readily:

    (1) Dress "modestly" rather than in high-end outfits with expensive accessories

    (2) On occasion, share with them some "appropriate" challenges you faced academically and perhaps maturing and/or adjusting to life so your students can identify with you as real person like them.

    (3) Take an interest in what is going on in their school and community; attend school events like games; be an advisor for an extra-curricular activity. [I know from experience] Be well.
