What dog should I get? Please read description below!?
I have a 4 year old Malamute/mutt. We can't afford lots of bones for him and he doesn't find entertainment with toys unless they have food inside them or we're there to throw them. He's very bored a lot of the time. So we thought of getting him a friend. We would like a puppy to start off, but then it would to be a medium sized or smaller dog, so my current dog would feel dominant. My dog currently gets along with almost all dogs, except he likes to pick fights with big dogs around his size. And we want a dog that can sleep on our beds, where he goes to the bathroom on the floors and is just too big. But when school starts and we are gone during the day I want the dogs to play together and not get in fights. We also want to adopt from a shelter. Any links or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

He doesn't need bones , he needs EXCERCISE. A tired malamute is a happy malamute, And the dominant issue isn't solved with a smaller dog, small dogs tend to be the more dominant ones, and if you get another dog, it will get hurt when you Mal decides to act up from boredom. Is he neutered? If not you should get him neutered, un neutered males tend to pick fights with other un neutered males. Before you go to school take him for a 45 min or an hour jog and he should be satisfied until you get home from school.

$20 bones are cheaper then adopting a dog which is $200+. Then shots vet bills getting it fixed more food... If get the bones if your tight on money. If you get a shelter dog they may have behavioral problems that are habitual now that may require a trainer. It can be expensive.

Always crate your dog when you leave. That's a must. Your dog already sounds aggressive and needs training why bring another one home? If you can't afford bones (maybe I'm reading things wrong but..) bones? Milkbones even? $3 a box? how can you afford a dog? Or a second dog??

Jack Russel Terriers (aka parson russel terriers) are great pets. But you would need to make sure they have room to play because they are very active dogs. They are a medium sized dog and very friendly.
