I don't know what to do anymore. :(?
College loans are stressing my mother and I out.
I'm about to begin college in August and I received the billing information about the college I am going to.
The college I am going to cost $45,063 a year to go to and I received $28,206 in Merit scholarships, talent scholarships, the college grant and the Pennsylvania state grant. I have to pay $5,500 in Stafford loans and my mother has to pay $10,000+ a year.
Unfortunately, she cannot pay that amount of money. My parents are divorced. There's four people in my house and my mom makes a little over $75,000 a year. My FAFSA EFC was 007175.
I'm getting so depressed about everything right now. :(
I really love the college that I am suppose to go to but if it's going to put my mother in $50,000 and she's 50 and supposed to retire in at least 10 years, I don't want her to suffer because of my college loans.
Oh and then I have law school to go to. I really wanted to be a lawyer. Is being a lawyer still worth it? I'm so confused about my career decisions right now.
I was going to major in Political Science and maybe Business but I don't know what to do anymore. I'm about to have a break down. :(
Oh yeah and state schools weren't an option for me. All of the state schools in Pennsylvania cost at least $17,000+ and my mother was still left with at least $10,000 to pay for me and then I had my Stafford loans and the state grant for the state schools isn't enough. I only received $900.
Oh, and I don't receive grants from Fafsa. I only get loans.
What are some good career options that I could make? I heard that being a lawyer isn't worth it, so what field could I go into to help me pay off these loans? Someone give me a suggestion please. :(
I was thinking about Community College and there is one in the county that I live in but a lot of people from my previous school district go there and I'm going to be reminded of the bullying I had for 10 years and I really don't want to feel that pain again because it's still affecting me now. :(
I want to try being a residence adviser in college but that position is only available for Sophomores or higher. If I was an RA, I'd be able to get that $10,409 off for room and board. If that happened, I would have to pay $22,000 in debt. Or I can get my mother to pay the $5500 for me a year and I'd help her by getting a job.
In May, I went to the financial adviser about my tuition problems and she said there's nothing that they could do. She said "Loans, Loans, Loans are your only options.."

You are right to be concerned. If your mom is going to go $50,000 in debt, you might look at alternatives.
I would say the #1 alternative is community college for 2 years. You probably don't care for the idea - it doesn't have quite the prestige a major university does. I can't tell what state you live in and what state your prospective college is in, but a state college will not cost $45,000/year. Don't know how that affects your scholarships.
The other alternative is that you get a part-time job to help pay for your education. That could help make a difference.

did you bother to apply to in-state safety schools? if you gained any merit scholarships to a big school, the you might have been eligible for a higher level of merit scholarships at schools were you are rated much higher than the average student
I am sorry you were bullied.... but you are eventually going to have to face those same people & you need to figure out how to ignore them & respond different... you are in control of the way you react & respond
there also might be a community college a little farther away -- my bf traveled over 60 miles one-way each day to go to a specific community college because it was the closest out of the 2 in the state properly accredited by CAAHIM for an associates degree in HIT
if he had to go that rather than any of the 3 that were closer... then there might be one a little ways out that does not have a large population of the students who bullied you
I agree with not giving up (words of Winston Churchill) but you have already talked with the fin aid office & seen the only option they will give you .... any credible financial planning advisor would tell your mom not to risk her retirement funds & not to co-sign on student loans
in your case, not giving up might mean accepting the concept of going to the cc with the people who were a problem for you

How about a college that's not so expensive or a in-state school where it's going to cost less as well? Use this tool to search for schools, http://bitly.com/19Wfl8K.

Why do you have to go to a four year univ. right off the bat? Why not attend a Community college for the first two years of your Gen. Ed. requirements and then transfer to a Univ? Community college is a fraction of the cost and you can use thow two years to begin saving for your own education.

look, if you really want to study there, you'll get there somehow. Persistence has a way of doing the seemingly impossible.
keep asking for help, and you will get it. I would go and explain the situation to the heads of the college you want to study in, and maybe you will be able to work something out - it's worth a try right?
As for your mothers retirement, you may take it upon yourself to take care of here once you have secured a job. In other words, you will give back what she has given to you. Keep on fighting. You'll find a way.
