Is this hair myth true?

For a while now I keep hearing that if you wash your hair ONLY once or twice a week, your hair will start to grow thicker and stronger. And that eventually if you do this for a while, your hair will get used to it and not become greasy as quickly.

Is this true?

Please don't just guess or assume an answer, only if you ACTUALLY know :)

Thanks :D

Hi I don't know about stronger and thicker, but your hairs natural oils are good for it and helps it grow healthily.

What I can assure you from my experience is that it does get used to being "greasy". I have very thin hair and when I didn't wash it almost every day it would get so gross and start to part. During my vacations, I didn't wash it and the first times it was gross, but for glory you just have to put up with it, and what began to happen is I could wash it much less often and my hair wouldn't look greasy. Now, I only wash it once a week. Literally. And it doesn't look greasy throughout. This happens because, your scalp produces more oil if it notices it's dried out (like when you wash it, especially often) so it produces more oil to make up for it. If it begins to notice it has enough oil, it's not going to produce more since there's already enough.

  • Yes and no.

This is true IF you are using shampoo, conditioner and styling products that contain ingredients that are irritants to the scalp.

However if you are using gentle, natural products that are non irritants it is a load of bunk.

The study Steve linked to holds true IF the surfactant you are using on your hair is a PURE soap. Todays shampoos and conditioners are NOT pure soaps and in fact contain many ingredients that alter the aroma and feel of the product that are in fact highly irritating to the scalp which does stimulate excessive sebaceous fluid production with frequent use. This is a coldly calculated thing, if the manufacturers put in ingredients that cause your hair to get dirty quicker, you'll use more of their product and increase their profit margin. This practice became commonplace AFTER the study in Steves link.

It is true and you would have to detox your hair and scalp to get all the products out that you have been using. It takes about 6 weeks to 6 months for your hair scalp to regulate itself. The longest I've gone without washing my hair was 6 months. That's because it was in braids. Of course my hair was very dirty but it was also healthy and grew just fine.

No, it is not true and the hypothesis that sebum(hair oil) production is influenced by how often hair is washed was proven false over half a century ago.

It is true but not for those who naturally have fine and/or greasy hair types though and also you have to eat and be more health especially to your hair by using hair treatments and getting rid of those split ends

(sebum) natural oils help heal hair from treating it with colour over time that's true it does help your hair out alot shampooing every day drys and strips the oils from your hair that is why they tell you to shampoo every second day and condition every day.

Stop fussing about hair and go read a book.

  • It is true but not everybody have the same result with the same treatment ...

Your body has his own way to react , depending on your age , hormones, diet ...
