Camera metering question for everyday use?

In general with your walk around photography such as vacation photos do you tend to use matrix or center weight metering mode? Or is there another mode you prefer?

For any and all kinds of shooting I'm nearly always on spot or matrix, and almost never centre. Don't know why exactly; probably because before I really understood metering modes properly I was on matrix without even knowing it (embarrassing, I know! In my defense, I am entirely self taught). Then as I studied more, I was advised to experiment with spot.

If it's a simple looking scene with no likely dynamic range issues, I'll go with matrix and exposure compensation until it looks right on the EVF (I trust my eyes more than the histogram for the most part). Spot is for the tougher situations or when I want to give a particular look to the scene, i.e to strongly bias it towards the lights, darks or midtones. In conjunction with an EVF or LCD (even the rather c**p one which my camera sports), I find that spot lets me get the scene almost exactly as I want it before I shoot (again, along with a bit of exposure compensation). Spot metering really makes me consider the scene and look at the highlights and shadows, decide what I want to emphasise and what I don't, and generally makes me analyse the scene that much more.

It'll be interesting to see the responses to this from the photographers who spent a lot of time with film cameras and who only had centre weighting for a long time.

For casual snapshooting, I probably use center-weighted most of the time, but I think I adjusted my meter area to 8mm instead of 12mm. I think. Yes, it goes back to years of CW metering with film. I'm also in P more than M for casual shooting, even though I almost always use M for anything that matters.

I spot meter 100% of the time. When I use film cameras, it's centre weighted.

Spot metering 95% of the time, and I shoot 95% of the time on Manual mode. I use the spot meter to meter what I want to be 18% gray luminance level in my shots, set the exposure manually, and shoot away. I hardly ever use auto-exposure modes.
