Soundbar and Home theater same source, same time?

I have a 2.1 Samsung Soundbar connected to my TVs Optical out.

A co-worker is selling me her Samsung 7.1 home theater she had bought for her Ex-husband for cheap. I have no reason to buy it other than it is for cheap, and I am also helping her.

My TV only has one optical out. Assuming I use an optical splitter...could I use both the soundbar and the home theater at once? Would one affect the other? Would the sound of too many "speakers" at once dissort the sound (waves.) Is it not recommended? Any advice?

My TV does not have HDMI ARCs...only HDMI ins, so it's not like I can use and HDMI out for one and an optical for the other.

Thanks!

I wouldn't use both at the same time. Arbitrarily placing multiple point sources creates interference patterns... alternating adding and subtracting of the two sources of sound. If the 7.1 system is better than the sound bar then use only it or otherwise don't bother buying it and just keep using the sound bar.

Thank you all so much. I wish I would had seen these answers, but Yahoo wouldn't let me see the post (until now all of a sudden.)

I bought it of 200 even. It retails for a lot more so why not have not

I got scared when I saw the other post about not accepting audio in, but I guess I got lucky. As soon as I read that, I went and looked in the back, and the manual, and it does indeed have a Optical in. And on the manual read 'Connect to the Digital Optical out jack of an external device using a Digital Optical cable.' I am HOPING that means I can feed it my TV's Optical out.

    The model is HT-D6730w.

Anyways, thanks for the answers. I will not set it both. I was wondering what you said too. About the sound interfering with the other's.

That Samsung "System" is a disk player. It will not accept optical. You cannot feed sound to it from your TV. It will only play sounds from disks you insert into the system.

(This is one of the reasons we never recommend these box systems - people do not realize what they are giving up for the low price).
