Not sure what you mean by symbols. The "symbols" will be notes, as is quarter notes, eighth notes, etc. If you aren't sure what they look like then look through this article.

So in normal piano, brass, guitar, etc. music you have two kinds on notes, musical and timing. The vertical placement of a note in piano tells you which musical note to play, E, F# and so on. In drum music the vertical placement tells you which drum to play, snare, bass, tom, cymbal, etc.
The timing is still the same, a quarter note is still counted the same way for drums or for piano, etc.
