Actually it is a DVD recorder, not a "laser scanner" as you described, even though it does use a laser and scans the disk.
The DVD recorder part is either a standard IDE/PATA or a SATA interface and both are available.
I have only run across one which used a non-standard mounting which required me making some custom mounting brackets for.
The electronics worked fine.
I could have found a direct replacement which would have been easier, however I did not want to be limited to what I considered to be a poor design in the first place.
From my experience, the problem can be solved about 80% of the time by cleaning the lens, however that takes experience and the proper equipment.
Sony will not deal with it due to its age, however that doesn't mean that it can't be repaired at a reasonable cost.
The problem is finding the right person in your area that may take on the challenge!
Good luck.
