After my tenant moved out I was over there and a guy walks up to me and says he knew my former tenant.?
He said my tenant faked falling on my steps and is going to sue me. A month later I received a letter from an atty wanting my ins info.
I had a handrail on the front porch steps, how can I prove he broke the step?
What to do?

So, if I get this right, the porch step is broken? If so, may have a problem, since if the step broke while tenant lived there, they could in fact have fallen and hurt themselves.
Even though you have a rail, if steps old, could cause it to split or break.
Since got letter from lawyer, this guy is not going away. Your best bet is to contact your insurance company for advice. They will investigate if this guy "faked" this injury, or if in fact you could be held liable. If this guy "faked" this injury, then most likely in a data base of other claims he has filed with other insurance companies.

Your only option is to present your witness testimony. It will probably be hearsay regardless unless this "informant" has hard evidence.

Do not answerr the attorneys letter without consulting an attorney first.
Take photographs of the steps. Make sure they're in good condition.
