Is it healthier to read out loud to read to yourself?

I was just wondering, if you are reading to yourself, and you come across a word you don't know, you are more likely to skip it. However, if you were to read aloud you would probably try to sound it out. Am I wrong or am I right?

Recalcitrant. I read that word for many years and never looked it up, always wondered what it meant. I sorta of figured it meant lagging behind which is basically correct. I talk to myself all the time as I understand myself well. I don't care what people think. I sing while shopping, I am happy. When you get older you find out all the stupid stuff is indeed stupid and you no longer worry about it. I never cared what other people thought, I was living MY LIFE NOT THEIRS! Always remember your life is your own, nobody elses.

Healthier? I don't think it matters. And I read fast enough that having to speak all the words out loud would slow me down. My brain can process what I read faster than my voice can go. I don't skip words I don't know, not usually. I stop and see if the meaning is reasonably clear from the context and if it isn't, or not clear enough, or if I'm just curious about this new word, I look it up.

I'd say it depends on the person. I read a lot and always have a dictionary handy. If I can't work out a meaning through context, I look it up. I'd feel silly reading out loud.
