Which room should get the window A/C?
Our central A/C is broken thanx to a power glitch. We can't afford to fix it. ...so we are opting to buy one single window A/C ~6400 BTU which is about all we can afford. In the house are 3 adults...me, my older sister, and my dad. My dad and I want the A/C in his room. My sister thinks it should go in hers.
I think the A/C should go in my dad's room because....
1) His age (77) and medical conditions....diabetes and heart meds.
2) I sleep in there when he's using the computer since dad's bed is more comfortable.
My sister (42 yrs old) thinks it should go in hers because:
1) Trying to recover from extreme iron deficiency anemia. The anemia causes her to be constantly short of breath so she spends the humid days and night suffering from multiple "I can't breathe" panic attacks. ...attacks she does not have when she's out in her air conditioned car.
2) Very strongly feels she's entitled to it since she's using her computer to work from home doing some kind of design work. I don't know what it is.
Question is...who should get the A/C...dad or sister?
We're in Texas in the general Houston area.
@Brenda: What is cheaper? A $165 window A/C unit or $3500 to fix the central A/C? Now add in the fact that the local service companies don't do discounts or payment plans. We've already checked with several and $3500 was the cheapest quote. Financing available only for those with good credit AND no bankruptcy.

Your dad should get the air conditioner. As for your sister...she needs to get off her high horse. Just because she's making money with her PC doesn't mean she's entitled to anything. I've been thru the iron anemia thing myself. I never had not one panic attack. IMO, her panic attacks are more about drama getting you and dad to feel sorry enough for her to let her have the A/C. DO NOT FALL FOR IT!
I'm siding for your dad because I used to work for an A/C contractor. If you guys had called to have the central air fixed you would have been placed on priority emergency because of your dad. Seniors and medically disabled were always given priority.
btw...you didn't say where you're from so we know if you are roasting or need just a little extra cooling.

If you can afford a window a/c unit, you can afford to have the central unit repaired. Call around & ask for the cheapest repair price. Some will give discounts & allow payments. Look for a non profit repair place. They usually will repair the unit for parts and/or labor, which would be cheaper than usual.
If you're still insisting on a window a/c unit, it goes in your dad's room. Your sister's working from home & should be making money to buy her own unit or split the cost of the repair with you & your dad.

Your dad should get it by default...he's a senior with medical conditions and he is most likely the homeowner as well. Your sister needs to quit being a selfish brat....she's working from home and should buy her own unit.

I think it is only right to let your dad have it. You can always get a portable fan or something cheaper for your sister.

Buy a portable AC. Put it in the room that needs to be cooled, then cool the other.
