Why are russia and ukraine fighting?

Russia is not directly fighting the Ukraine, if you listen to them. They are though, by proxy, fighting in that there are many living in the Ukraine that are still loyal to Russia who for a long time actually occupied and ruled the Ukraine. Many of those Ukraine citizens who still love and area loyal to Russia are the ones fighting and trying, again, to assume power and Russia, as a Nation, is supporting them by supplying weapons and financial help to enable them to hopefully reach their goal of gaining power where then they could establish a government, for all of Ukraine, that is allied with Russia once again.

Many though in the Ukraine remember communist rule and love freedom and thus want to remain their own nation apart from Russia and more aligned with the West (West Europe, NATO, and the West).

The problem is that when you have citizens fighting citizens and both sides are being supported and helped by the larger superpowers then there is always the chance of a direct involvement by both superpowers and direct conflict between the two larger powers that get drawn unto the small conflict by either mistake or accident and once they are there it only escalates.

The same type danger exist in Korea with the North being supported by China and the South being supported by the US yet North and South are technically still at a state of war and by obligation each side promises support for the other and actions could bring the two larger nations into direct conflict, again, by accident or purpose.

So while some may say Russia is fighting the Ukraine what they are doing is supporting, financially, with troops and equipment, separatist who are loyal to Russia and want to be controlled by Russia again. So if one side can't stand down then there is always the chance that the citizens that want to remain free, in Ukraine, will come in direct conflict with Russian troops who then will fight direct with them after being attacked. IF that happens then no one, US, England, Europe, NATO etc wants to risk direct conflict with Russia and Russian troops for risk of unlimited escalation. It's small conflicts like this that start world wars so naturally it's wise to keep abreast of what's going on.

They are not in combat. The Kiev regime is fighting the local defense forces in the eastern Russian speaking region of the Ukraine. They want to regain control of the region from the former protesters, now administrators in a self-proclaimed autonomous region. The Ukrainian army has killed over 1,000 people in a few months.

Russia is not officially involved in this conflict but the conflict is right near and on the border with the Ukraine so they have a right to protect the area. The Ukraine military killed one resident on the Russian side. Russian citizens and volunteers have gone to help the defense forces in eastern Ukraine.
