How do I protect the wall around a cast-iron tub?

I have a painted cast-iron tub installed about an inch or two from the wall. The tub is rounded, so I don't think that I can or should install a surround.

What can I do to protect the walls and floor so that I can use the tub without rotting out the floor? The space between the tub and wall is very narrow, and I would have trouble even painting this area. Should I install beadboard?

You really don't need to protect the wall or floor in any special way. Cast iron tubs have been installed with that kind of gap between them and the wall for a long long time. The house i grew up in had such a tub, installed in 1890 or so, and the floor was still holding up the tub in 1975. Just don't splash the equivalent of a bucket full of water all over the place while using the tub and the floor and wall will be fine. If you really can't help getting water everywhere, then roll up a towel to cover the gap when you use the tub.

They make pretty thick rubber grommets to use.
