Why do some people in this day and age believe in magic?
I'm not talking about religion, though religious healing and perhaps other miracles are effectively the same thing. I understand that everybody has their own beliefs, and I support this. I think its a fundamental human right that you are entitled to believe whatever you want, providing you don't force this on others and it is not harmful to anyone around you. Whilst I'm not religious, I can understand why others are. After all, science can not yet entirely answer the questions we have about our origins as a species, the beginning of the universe etc. and no one can completely disprove the existence of God. I find that religion has adapted to our increased understanding of history and the world around us - for example, many now take religious stories to be entirely metaphoric. However, I can't understand how anyone can still believe in actual magic. People come on YA and ask questions about how to use black and white magic and wicca. I don't know much about the subject, so I don't want to come across as though I'm being arrogant or aggressive, I just don't understand how in the 21st century people actually believe this stuff. Is it a failure of the education system? too many books and movies and video games? are they all a bunch of teenagers trying to stand out or just going through a phase? what on earth are they thinking?
To clarify, this isn't intended to be horrible or condescending. It's a genuine question - I can't get me head around it
Scott Loves Jennifer: Children don't naturally believe in anything. They are born with instinct and instinct alone. They observe things that they don't understand and magic is the word they use to describe it. They read fairy tales and stuff like that which tells them about magic, and we lie to them about a fat man travelling around the world on a flying vehicle pulled by reindeer in a single night to give everyone presents. Amongst other things, this is why children believe in magic.
Ladyren: Completely agree with everything you have written. A secular world is the way forward
Nice Guy: Would you be able to provide any evidence to support that? And, if its real, why are we not all using it?

You are probably confused because you are thinking of the type of magic represented in movies or video games. Harry potter magic is science fiction. However, real magik(K, not to confuse with tricks) does exist.

If anything, I think people were much more superstitious in the past. It wasn't until the rise of science, philosophy, intellectualism where skepticism was started to rise, especially during the modern age

Belief in paranormal, gods, sky daddies, floating male Jewish zombies, Adam and Eve, sticks turning into snakes, and the rest of the biblical silliness are beliefs among the least educated of our population. The more education one gets, the less likely they follow any of this silliness.
I believe that people have a right to believe anything they wish.... they do NOT have a right to foist it into my government, my public schools, nor display that silliness in my public parks.
You forget...some people really do need imaginary friends, and the threat of burning forever in hell just to keep them in line....at least, this was the tribe of Israel's take on it 2000+ years ago. Yes, of course it is all silly, and it doesn't really work either. 98% of those in jails or prisons are either Christian or Muslim, with less than 1% atheist.
Go figure.
