How are we to appraise the cultural changes that have come with contemporary reproductive technologies?

There are many people, I do not doubt, who contend that our reproductive technologies have been a blessing with no downside whatsoever. Undoubtedly, contraception has made things more convenient for many people in any number of ways, and I do not doubt that raising children entails great financial sacrifices, especially when a family has more than three children.

That stated, it is my contention that those who maintain this view are only viewing one side of the equation. A very different view comes from Mark Oshinskie at the American Thinker website. In a piece that appeared this past Friday, Mr. Oshinskie made a case that, in my view, at the very least merits some consideration:

In some respects it reminds me of the early to mid 20th century when eugenics were practiced as well only usually this was done through sterilization of what were then considered undesirables. There were also clubs formed by people who were thought to have the most desirable traits. Hitler even picked up on those practices and communicated with the progressives who were engaged in eugenics. After the ugliness of Hitler's use of eugenics, most of those practices were discontinued but some were still practiced into the 70's.

I can see how having a healthy, good looking, intelligent child would be of great importance and at some point, the continuation of the human race may depend on this technology. There have always been people who "had it all" compared to those who might be considered inferior to them. Of course, each person has some valuable, unique trait that is revealed through human interaction. We all touch others in some way but today people seem to have a different set of values.

Now there seems to be a desire to control everything from the weather/climate to even what gender one wants to be. God seems to be out of their equation now, therefore, some see no reward in sacrificing for their loved ones nor the need for any kind of gratitude which has been replaced by an attitude of demands and entitlement. At some point, our lives will be run by artificial intelligence and robots will be doing many of the jobs now done by people. I'm not sure what the purpose of mankind will become but I see no dignity left for the human race in that kind of world. I'm sure it must have been depicted in some episodes of the Twilight Zone..
