Other explanations for the error include but are not limited to:
* Server is fielding to many requests that, even if its programmers are competent, there's no way it could keep up.
* There's a connection problem between the client & server, which the client cannot detect except by lack of response from the server (timeout).

I would not put it that way, but one of those fringe errors that most programmers would miss entirely.
