3x + 2 - x = 11x + 9
First combine all the like terms:
2x + 2 = 11x + 9
Now subtract 2x from both sides
2 = 9x + 9
Now subtract 9 from both sides
-7 = 9x
Now divide both sides by 9 and you have solved for x.

4x + 2 - x = 11x + 9
combine like terms:
3x + 2 = 11x + 9
subtract 2 from both sides:
3x = 11x + 7
subtract 11x from both sides:
-8x = 7
divide both sides by -8:
x = -7/8

You made an error right at the beginning, Battleaxe. The first term is 3x+2-x not 4x+2-x. Texman's explanation is correct and the answer is x=7/9.
